Carlisle Castle

Built in 1092, Carlisle Castle is situated on the edge of the city centre with the River Eden running alongside. It is home to the famous ruins of Queen Mary’s Tower which gained its name from Mary Queen of Scots who was imprisoned there for a while. This popular visitors attraction is full of history from the many eventful years of the past which are displayed in the Castle Keep. Guided tours are available around the castle, as well as a unique gift shop and picnic area to sit back and enjoy your lunch surrounded by the great castle walls.

Special themed tours are available at certain events throughout the year such as ghostly tours at Halloween and Victorian Lantern tours over the Christmas period.

A short stroll from the castle towards the centre is Carlisle Cathedral, founded in 1122 full of interesting history. It was fought over for many years by the English and the Scots as well as the Vikings invading it.
