Hadrian’s Wall and Birdoswald Roman Fort

Hadrian’s Wall is the main attraction in this beautiful area in the north of Cumbria, which is home to more than half of the wall running through the county providing lots of interesting features and attractions full of information on its history. This world heritage site was built by the Roman Empire back in 122AD to form a border between the north and south of Britain. Many believe it was used as a defence for England against the Scots. The wall covers a length of 73 miles, resulting in this being the largest Ancient Monument in Northern Europe. With 14 major roman sites and museums along the wall, this ensures there is an attraction to please the whole family..

One of the most popular attractions along this amazing wall is Birdoswald. If you’re interested in the history of Hadrian’s Wall, this is the perfect place to go.  Birdoswald is a roman fort with extensive remains; a visitor’s centre is located at this site with lots of artefacts and displays to look through, full of history on this World Heritage Site.

Special events are held throughout the year; which is well worth looking out for during your holiday, such as the illuminating of Hadrian’s Wall and Roman re-enactments.

All the attractions and sites around the wall mixed with large number of walking and cycle routes available to do results in this being a perfect place to holiday.
