About the local area

A warm welcome awaits visitors to Chatton where a shop and pub with restaurant, renowned for its excellent cuisine, is only 4 miles from Aidan Cottage.  Chatton Trout Fishery invites guests to fish without a rod licence in the picturesque 4-acre lake, and where disabled anglers are also catered for, close by.  The village is nestled between the wild, heather-topped expanses of the Cheviot Hills to the West and the Heritage coastline to the East ensuring Aidan Cottage is an excellent base for exploring the coast and the countryside alike. The friendly small town of Wooler, (known locally as Glendale the inspiration for ‘Postman Pat’s Greendale!) is only 7 miles away and offers many facilities at the foot of the Cheviot Hills. This is a popular destination for those who enjoy cycling, hang-gliding, and golf, horse-riding and walking – the challenging route of the ‘St Cuthbert’s Way’ runs close by.   Bamburgh, renowned for its majestic fortress and stretch of golden, sandy beach is within easy reach. The elegant Georgian town of Berwick which straddles the salmon-rich River Tweed, and the cobbled, market town of Alnwick, protected by its dramatic castle, both offer a wide array of amenities around half an hour’s drive. Alnwick Garden is a popular visitor attraction to see the Grand Cascade Waterfall and dine in the restaurant within the largest tree house in Europe!  This is England’s Borderland and often referred to as ‘the secret kingdom’ – the Scottish Borders are within 20 miles making Aidan Cottage a superb, relaxing and high quality retreat to explore the Northumbrian countryside and the Heritage coastline with easy access to the Scottish Borders too.
