About the local area

A friendly greeting often welcomes guests to Wooler, found nestled at the foot of the wild, heather capped expanses of the Cheviot Hills, at the gateway to the Northumberland National Park and where several good restaurants, shops and pubs are a mere gentle stroll away. This is a popular destination for those who enjoy cycling, hang gliding, golf, horse riding and walking - the challenging route of 'St Cuthbert's Way' runs close by and footpaths from Humbleton falls lead directly onto Humbleton Hill. The surrounding area, with its spectacular scenery, is known locally as Glendale- the inspiration for 'Postman Pat's Greendale'. Chatton Trout Fishery invites amateur anglers to fish without a rod licence in a picturesque 4 acre lake just 5 miles east. The elegant Georgian town of Berwick, which straddles the salmon rich River Tweed, and the cobbled, market town of Alnwick, protected by its own dramatic fortress, which is home to the Duke of Northumberland (and film location for Harry Potter's Hogwarts Academy!) both offer a wide array of amenities 17 miles away. Alnwick Garden is a popular visitor attraction to experience the Grand Cascade Waterfall and dine in the restaurant within the largest tree house in Europe. The sweeping golden, sandy beaches and dramatic castles and ruins for which the Northumberland heritage coastline is renowned for is only a half hour drive east making Humbleton Falls an excellent base for exploring both the rugged wild and lonely moors and hills within this stunning open countryside coupled with easy access to the Scottish border 'toon' as well as the 20 mile stretch of golden sands and rocky outcrops the glorious Northumbrian seashore is designated as An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
