Beach Holidays

Northumberland is renowned for its magnificent coastline with its abundance of pristine sandy beaches, secluded bays and pretty fishing villages that stretch for some forty miles between Berwick in the north and Amble in the south. This area has rightly been designated ‘An area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’.

Bamburgh is perhaps the most famous beach along this stretch of coastline with the imposing castle dominating the skyline. Nominated as one of Britain’s favourite beaches in a recent ITV program the wide expanse of sands provide the ideal environment for a family day out at the beach or an evening stroll with your dog. In fact along this coastline dogs are permitted on all beaches except Newbiggin-by-the-sea.

A great selection of beaches can also be found at Beadnell, Alnmouth, Embleton and Cheswick all with an abundance of wildlife. The coastline is home to thousands of waders, ducks and geese and of course many of the visitors to this area take boat trips to visit the nearby Farne Islands to see the grey seals which breed there in the winter.

For those interested in the local history the beaches offer a wealth of culture and history.  Holy Island Castle, Bamburgh Castle and Dunstanburgh Castle are all perched on the sea front.  Interesting shops, markets and restaurants also adorn the seafront and with fantastic public transport around the area you can leave your car at your cottage for the majority of your holiday if you wish.

Back on the water you can enjoy a whole host of activities including sailing, windsurfing and sea canoeing. And of course you shouldn’t forget the Northumberland Coastal Path which stretches for 64 miles along some of the most scenic parts of the UK or the St Oswald’s Way which starts at Holy Island.
