Berwick-Upon-Tweed is an historic market town situated at the Scottish border, lying on the east coast at the mouth of the River Tweed. It played a central role in the border wars between Scotland and England from the 11th century, but since 1482 has lain on the English side of the border.

Built in 1558, the Elizabethan town walls were built to keep the invading Scots out of the town. Today they provide spectacular views over the wide estuary of the River Tweed including Stephenson's famous viaduct bridge, hailed as one of the finest in the world. A walk around the walls takes around 45 minutes and gives excellent views into Berwick itself as well as of the River Tweed, the bridges and the surrounding countryside.

Inside these formidable walls you'll find a charming Georgian market town with a huge range of things to do and enjoy including The Maltings Theatre and Arts Centre, Chain Bridge Honey Farm, and the Berwick Barracks and Main Guard Museum, as well as unique events such as the Riding of the Bounds and Border Marches, celebrating the unique town boundaries.

Berwick-upon-Tweed is a fascinating and beautiful town ideally located for days out both north and south of the border.
