About the local area

Barrasford is an ancient village, which lies in the shadow of Haughton Castle, on the very edge of the Northumberland National Park. Steeped with a rich history, the village is notable for being the location of a Bronze Age burial site where the Reaverhill Dagger was excavated in 1964. Today, this friendly village enjoys an air of peace and tranquility with a local shop being only a few yards from Bramble Cottage and a pub renowned for serving excellent cuisine a mere 300 yards away. The historic market town of Hexham, dominated by its dramatic abbey is often renowned as the jewel in Northumberland’s crown and is where many facilities are available, including a cinema / theatre, indoor swimming and an abundance of shops and restaurants, all only 7 miles south of Barrasford. Golfers will delight in the several prestigious courses close by and walkers and cyclists will enjoy discovering the miles of wild and beautiful open countryside this area is renowned for. This is the very heart of Hadrian’s Wall Country, an area with a rich Heritage to explore –the Roman Site at Corstopitum, Corbridge, Vindolanda and Housesteads Roman Fort are only a sample of the historical visitor attractions well worth a visit. Kielder Water and Forest Park lie 25 miles to the north, the largest man-made lake in northern Europe with the darkest night skies in England. Take the train from Hexham and explore; it’s only a half hour to Newcastle to the east or an hour to Carlisle to the west. The vibrant city of Newcastle, well-known for its global, cultural pursuits and the extensive shopping facilities at the world renowned Gateshead Metro Centre along with the Gateshead Millennium bridge, the Baltic Centre and the Sage Gateshead music venue are all fascinating places to visit. Stunning Alnwick Castle and Gardens, the Northumbrian coast, with its many castles and picturesque harbours are all easily accessible, as is the Lake district National Park to the west. All in all, Bramble Cottage offers a superb retreat and an excellent base from which to discover this beautiful part of Northumberland.
