With an abundance of history literally on the doorstep, Hexham is filled with interesting places to visit, explore and enjoy. Hexham Abbey sits proudly to the rear of Hexham House and dominates the market place of the town. Dating back to AD674, this old priory boasts an interactive exhibition and a visitor centre, as well as fabulous grounds and public spaces. Hexham Old Gaol is another historic site and certainly worth a visit at any time of year. For guests who enjoy a day at the races, Hexham Racecourse is situated just 2 miles away and has a packed calendar all year round. Hexham boasts a theatre, cinema, golf course, rowing club, skateboard park, leisure centre with pool, running track and ten-pin bowling alley, so guests should always be able to find something to enjoy during their stay.
Hexham is located just 6 miles from the world famous Hadrian’s Wall, the county’s greatest Roman monument and World Heritage Site, which stretches 73 miles across the backbone of Northumberland. Crossing through stunning countryside, natural woodland and meadows, there are plenty of established public footpaths, cycle paths, bridleways and popular walks and cycle routes that guests must take the opportunity to explore, as well as Roman forts and settlements that include Vindolanda, Chesters and Housesteads.
The pretty town of Corbridge is only a little over 5 miles away and offers some great places to eat and drink, as well as boutique shops and a stroll along the riverbanks. The Northumberland National Park and International Dark Skies Park are both close by and offer some of the most fabulous scenery and views, as well as unbeatable star gazing at night. Hexham is also very well positioned for exploring the bordering counties of Cumbria and County Durham, with Carlisle, the Lake District and the cathedral city of Durham all easily reachable within an hour’s drive. Just 20 miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, guests will find there are plenty of shopping opportunities, art galleries, museums, restaurants and bars. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.
