Tucked up the end of a small and private lane nestles The Smithy, a quaint detached stone built cottage. Originally built in the 1850’s, this charming property now offers a cosy retreat for couples within walking distance of the facilities within the picturesque village of Ovington set within the Tyne Valley. Ovington is situated just over a mile from Prudhoe, where there is a Riverside Country Park on the banks of the river Tyne close by. Prudhoe sits equidistant between Hexham to the west and Gateshead to the east; both being 13 miles.

About the local area

There are ample shops, pubs and eateries available and children will have fun in Water World close by. A short drive east will bring you to the vibrant city of Newcastle, well known for its global cultural pursuits and the extensive shopping facilities at the world renowned Gateshead Metro Centre. The Millennium Bridge, the Baltic Centre and the Sage Gateshead music venue are all interesting visitor attractions. The pretty village or Corbridge, renowned for its specialist shops and quaint tea rooms is only 10 miles west and the  historic market town of Hexham, dominated by its majestic abbey offers an abundance of amenities 3 miles further on. Tanfield Steam Railway is well worth a visit and golfing enthusiasts will enthuse in the ample choice of several prestigious courses within easy reach, one being the superior De Vere Slaley course. Ramblers and cyclists will enjoy exploring the heather moorlands across the easily accessible Hadrian’s Wall Country and the Northern Pennines with their rugged uplands which include some of the highest, wildest and most beautiful scenery in the country. Hamsterley Forest provides miles of lovely forest walks leading to High Force; England’s largest waterfall. Bowes Museum, Raby Castle, Beamish Museum, Vindolanda, the Roman Site at Corstopitum and Housesteads Roman Fort Museum are all interesting historic attractions within easy driving distance. The Smithy offers an excellent base for couples to explore the many historic delights across Hadrian’s Wall Country or why not take an easy drive east to discover the glorious Heritage coastline or west to the Lake District National Park.
