Less than ten miles east of Newcastle city centre is the picturesque village of Tynemouth, dominated at the seaward end by the magnificent English Heritage attraction of Tynemouth Priory and Castle. The nearby Victorian Metro station has a lively market at weekends selling a wide range of goods such as books, music and household bric-a-brac.
