Description

Commanding dramatic sea views, Limpet Cottage sits in a small terrace perched on the sea front in the peaceful coastal village of Boulmer. Pronounced Boomer, it is a pretty coastal village with very little traffic. Once the haunt of smugglers it is one of the true Northumbrian fishing villages which remains virtually untouched by time. Meander along the waters edge and watch the fishermen return with their daily catch of lobsters, crabs and salmon. The historic market town of Alnwick is just 6 miles away. Dominated by its dramatic fortress, it offers a wide range of amenities including a playhouse, indoor swimming pool and an excellent array of restaurants, shops, tea rooms and pubs. Take time to visit Barter Books, one of the largest secondhand bookshops in Britain, or discover the magnificent Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland and film location for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts.

Alnwick Garden, a spectacular interpretation of a formal garden, has a grand cascade waterfall and poison garden, and guests can dine in the restaurant in the largest tree house in Europe. Less than 3 miles walk along the beach is the picture postcard village of Alnmouth, where a variety of good restaurants, pubs, tea rooms and gift shops for the discerning visitor can be enjoyed. Yacht and small boat moorings within the sheltered estuary are available for the sailing enthusiasts. For the golfers, there are two courses close by, one being a fine 9-hole course adjacent to the beach, and the other being a challenging 18-hole course at Foxton with panoramic views. Limpet Cottage is situated on a National Cycle Route, making this property particularly suitable for keen cyclists. This is a superb choice for couples seeking self-catering accommodation. It is conveniently all on one level and situated only a gentle stroll from the seashore of the beautiful Northumbrian coastline, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

About the local area

Alnwick is in the heart of Northumberland, famous for its unspoilt beauty, and is one of the most picturesque areas of countryside in England - with long sandy beaches, quiet friendly villages, the Simonside and Cheviot hills, well preserved medieval Castles, and gardens.

There are numerous Stately Homes in the area including the fantastic Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland and often referred to as "The Windsor of the north". The medieval market town originally prospered as a staging post, being only a day's ride from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north and Newcastle upon Tyne in the south. It still retains many of its cobbled streets, narrow alleys and fine stone buildings which now house a range of specialist shops and family businesses as wells as some of what once totaled over 50 inns.

Alnwick Castle, the home of the Duke of Northumberland, provides a wonderful day out for all the family. It has magnificent spacious grounds designed by Capability Brown, domineering medieval towers, a 14th century dungeon, beautiful State Rooms and there are various museums covering the region's military and archaeological history. Next to the Castle is the spectacular Alnwick Garden where you can experience The Grand Cascade with its many weirs and fountains, The Ornamental Garden with more than 15,000 plants, The Rose Garden of walkways heavily scented with climbing and shrub roses, clematis and honeysuckle, and there are many 'secret' gardens where you can sit amongst the pergolas, fruit trees and individual pools. Because it is a continually developing garden with major projects always underway, it provides something new for those that return time after time.

The Alnwick countryside is also a great area for walking, short and long hikes, cycling, fishing, and in fact every kind of country pursuit. South east lies the valleys and heather topped expanses of Coquetdale and the Simonside Hills around Rothbury - a haven for hillwalkers and cyclists and a gateway to the Northumberland National Park.

The coastline of the Alnwick region consists of over 20 spectacular miles of golden sands, rocky outcrops and sand dunes which provide fun days out for all the family and peaceful beach strolls along the sweeping sands of Druridge Bay and Cresswell. Coastal villages include the lively harbour town of Amble, beautiful Warkworth with its magnificent castle, and picturesque Alnmouth, home of the oldest golf course in Britain.
