The Old Reading Room is a detached stone built cottage situated right in the heart of the picture postcard coastal village of Bamburgh. Tucked up a small, private lane, this quaint property was built in the early 1800s and originally used as an infant school. It then became the reading room for the village and finally a doctor’s surgery. The Old Reading Room now provides self catering holiday accommodation where restaurants, tea rooms, shops and pubs are all a mere gentle stroll away. Visit the interesting Grace darling Museum close by or amble down to the glorious expanse of golden sands only a few minute’s walk from The Old Reading Room.

About the local area

Take a trip to Lindisfarne, locally known as Holy Island; the causeway leading onto the island is swept by the North Sea but safe to cross twice daily. Two miles north is the bird sanctuary of Budle Bay where at low tide a vast expanse of mud flats is the home to countless thousands of sea and land birds making this location a haven for bird watchers. The traditional fishing village of Seahouses is only 3 miles down the coastline which has a good range of local shops including a Co-op and the Chinese takeaway and Indian restaurants are well worth a visit. Boat trips to the Farne Islands - famous for bird sanctuaries and the seal colony - can be arranged from the harbour in Seahouses. There are several golf courses, some of them at championship level, in the area and horse riding is available close by too. The elegant Georgian town of Berwick, which straddles the salmon rich river Tweed, is 17 miles north and the bustling market town of Alnwick with its own magnificent castle is the ancestral home to the Duke of Northumberland ( and film location for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Academy!) also offering many facilities around 15 miles away. Alnwick Garden is a popular visitor attraction with its grand cascade waterfall and restaurant set within the largest tree house in Europe! The Old Reading Room makes an idyllic base to explore 20 miles of stunning Heritage coastline designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
