The small and welcoming town of Wooler is found nestled at the foot of the wild, heather capped expanses of the Cheviot Hills only 12 miles south. Wooler sits at the gateway to the Northumberland National Park and offers several good restaurants, shops and pubs. This is a popular destination for those who enjoy cycling, gliding, golf, horse riding and walking - the challenging route of the ’St Cuthbert’s Way’ runs close by. Lindisfarne (Holy Island) and Bamburgh are a half hour drive east. Alnwick Castle, famous for Harry Potter films and its spectacular gardens and tree house cafe, Ford and Etal Estate with castle, miniature steam railway and mill and Chillingham Castle with its world famous wild cattle are all within easy reach. The surrounding area, with its spectacular scenery, is known locally as Glendale - the inspiration for ’Postman Pat’s Greendale’. The historic towns of Kelso and Berwick upon Tweed offer a wide array of amenities and the Heritage coastline with its sweep of golden, sandy beaches is also within an easy driving distance. Poppy Cottage is snuggled amongst the beautiful uninterrupted landscape of North Northumberland and very close to England’s borderland. This unique location, often referred to as ’the secret kingdom’ makes an excellent base to explore North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders alike.
