Description

Meldon Park was built by the renowned architect John Dobson in 1832 for Isaac Cookson and remains the home of the Cookson family.   Dobson is known to have walked the grounds for a month before choosing the imposing site of the house, on a ledge above the valley of the River Wansbeck, in the northern part of an old deer park. The accommodation available is a substantial self-contained wing with independent access.  The spacious lounge boasts the comfort of a wood-burning stove ensuring a cosy welcome awaits guests regardless of the season and enjoys views across the stunning garden grounds.  Meldon Park is a traditional rural estate positioned on the north bank of the River Wansbeck where fishing for brown trout can be arranged and commands magnificent views across the peaceful parkland and ancient woodlands.  Guests are welcome to roam the 9 acres surrounding the main house or wander across the wider estate of some 3,500 acres if desired.   Take time for a stroll up to the kitchen garden close by.

Visitors will also enjoy the grandeur of Wallington Hall, a National Trust property with a farm shop and walled garden only 5 miles west and Belsay Hall is also worth a visit.  The ancient market town of Morpeth offers a wide array of amenities only 8 miles East and the picturesque village of Rothbury, found nestled at the foot of the Simonside and Lordenshaw hills is known locally as ‘The Gateway to the Northumberland National Park’ only 10 miles North.   Other interesting attractions close by are the English Heritage site at Brinkburn Priory and the National Trust 1,000 acres estate property at Cragside. The World Heritage Site at Hadrian’s Wall within the most Northerly National Park is a mere half hour drive west. The bustling market town of Alnwick, dominated by its majestic castle is home to the Duke of Northumberland (and film location for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Academy!) and offers many facilities within an hour’s drive, including a cinema / playhouse, indoor swimming pool with leisure facilities and a wide array of inns, shops and restaurants. The Alnwick Garden is popular with tourists; it includes a Grand Cascade waterfall, a Poison garden and a restaurant within the largest tree house in Europe. Or take a trip to the vibrant city of Newcastle and the extensive shopping facilities at the world renowned Gateshead Metro Centre only 20 miles South.    Meldon Park will appeal to those seeking a rural and relaxing retreat in a beautiful setting, which is well placed to explore the wild expanses of unspoilt wilderness to the North and West coupled with miles of sweeping, golden, sandy beaches this Heritage shoreline is renowned for to the East.
