There are miles of unspoilt walks and cycle tracks on the doorstep; mountain bikes can be hired only two minutes walk from Kielder Castle Cottage. The impressive Kielder Observatory, dedicated in honour to Sir Patrick Moore by the Kielder Observatory Astronomical Society, is close by and makes an interesting visit. Leaplish Visitor Centre offers entertainment for children with its indoor swimming pool, archery and play park only 6 miles east. Fishing permits are available on Kielder Water - Northern Europe’s largest man made lake, cradled by the Forest Park, and pony trekking, wind surfing, sailing and ferry trips are only a small selection of the many outdoor activities which can be arranged locally.
The pretty village of Bellingham offers many facilities including quaint shops, tea rooms and inns around a half hour drive and guests will enjoy a visit to Otterburn Mill. This is an area with a rich heritage to explore and an excellent base to discover the wild and lonely beauty across west Northumberland and beyond. The popular market town of Hexham, dominated by its majestic abbey is an easy drive further afield and the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall offers many interesting visitor attractions, including Vindolanda and Housesteads Roman Fort Museum. Kielder Castle Cottage makes an excellent base to explore Northumberland and the Scottish Borders too.
