About the local area

Rothbury offers an abundance of facilities including several shops, pubs and quaint tea rooms.  Fishing for salmon and trout on the River Coquet is a popular pastime (permits available locally) and golf can be arranged on the idyllic riverside course.  The National Trust property of Cragside was the first home to be lit by hydro-electricity and the elegant house and its grounds are a popular visitor attraction close by.  Rothbury is the ideal base from which to explore the Northumberland National Park and is appealing to ramblers and cyclists with its many excellent walks on the doorstep, from gentle riverside strolls to climbing the imposing Simonside Hills, which form a great sandstone ridge and Special Area of Conservation with 360 degree views from coast to hills.  The Lordenshaws have impressive remains of an Iron Age Hillfort, Bronze Age burials and rock carvings set in open heather moorland.  The bustling market town of Alnwick 15 miles to the east is protected by its dramatic castle, the ancestral home to the Duke of Northumberland (famous as the film location for Harry Potter).  Enjoy a trip to the superb Alnwick Garden, with its Grand Cascade Waterfall and the restaurant in the largest tree house in Europe.
The Heritage coastline this area is renowned for, and designated as An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is less than 20 miles away ensuring The Croft provides an excellent central base for exploring both the wild and lonely beauty of the unspoilt heather capped hills to the west along with the golden, sandy beaches to the east.
